KHACHATURIAN Violin Concerto
BRAHMS Symphony No. 3
About
Brahms’ high-spirited Symphony No. 3 anchors this bold and lyrical program. Music Director Laureate Marin Alsop and French-Serbian violinist Nemanja Radulović unite their dynamic energy in Khachaturian’s vibrant Violin Concerto, marking Radulović’s highly-anticipated BSO debut.
- Brahms begins his Symphony No. 3 with three notes — F-Ab-F—that represent his personal motto, "Frei aber froh," or "free but happy." The strength summoned by that phrase plays through the piece, which earned it the nickname "Brahms's 'Eroica'" (after Beethoven's 3rd Symphony with the same moniker) by Hans Richter, the conductor who premiered it.
- French-Serbian violinist Nemanja Radulović has taken Europe by storm with daring interpretations and infectious charisma, and makes his debut with the BSO in this concert.
- Reena Esmail's RE|Member explores music making in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, a way to "honor the experience of coming back together, infused with the wisdom of the time apart."
