About

In the kickoff to our EARTH | Songs Festival, Stravinsky’s revolutionary and even notorious The Rite of Spring bursts with untamed energy and depicts a Russian pagan ritual. The more introspective D’un Matin de printemps by Lili Boulanger and Tan Dun’s percussion concerto – featuring BSO Principal Percussionist Edouard Beyens – offer poignant reflections on humanity’s evolving connection to nature.

  • When Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring premiered in 1913, the work was found so revolutionary that Parisian audiences rioted. The moment marked what is considered by many to be a turning point in music history towards modernism, and Rite has become one of the most important works in orchestral repertoire. It's a bucket-list piece for any symphony fan!
  • Lili Boulanger died at only 24 years old, but her music and legacy were preserved by her sister, Nadia Boulanger, the most famous composition pedagogue of the 20th century, whose students included Aaron Copland, Philip Glass, and Astor Piazzolla.
  • Tan Dun, whose GRAMMY-winning scores include Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, offers a percussion concerto depicting our relationship with a changing climate.
  • This program is part of the EARTH | Songs Festival, which reflects on humanity's relationship with nature through music inspired by its beauty, power, and fragility. The festival's events include:
    • Reimagined: Vivaldi's Four Seasons (Popular Collection, Fusion Series: February 13 – 14)
    • The Rite of Spring (Classical Collection/Series: February 26 – March 1)
    • Heyward Conducts Mahler (Classical Collection/Series:- March 6 – 8)
    • Appalachian Spring & Beethoven 6 with Alsop (Classical Collection/Series: April 16 – 19)
