About
Brothers Demarre and Anthony McGill give a world premiere by jazz piano icon Billy Childs reflecting on America's 250th. Rachmaninoff unapologetically captures the Russian musical spirit in his Symphony No. 3, while Shostakovich elicits a celebratory mood.
- Dmitri Shostakvoich composed the Festive Overture in only three days. A friend recalled, "The speed with which he wrote was truly astounding. Moreover, when he wrote light music he was able to talk, make jokes and compose simultaneously, like the legendary Mozart."
- Rachmaninoff thought his Symphony No. 3, his most overtly Russian orchestral pieces, was one of his best works. With a range of emotional depths and heights, inspiration from his homeland, themes you'll be singing to yourself after the concert ends, and a balance of delicate and forceful moments, what's not to love?
- Anthony McGill serves as principal clarinet of the New York Philharmonic, and his brother Demarre McGill is principal flute of the Seattle Symphony. Though they live on opposite coasts, their frequent collaborations with major symphony orchestras have wowed audiences across the U.S.
