Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, "From the New World," is a favorite for a reason, its melodies unfolding with an effortless flow that carries listeners from one idea to the next, infused with echoes of American folk song and spirituals. Superstar pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet brings his own star power to a vivid passion project: Khachaturian’s flamboyant, technicolor Piano Concerto, tailor-made for his dazzling virtuosity.
Listen Closer
- Jean-Yves Thibaudet has championed Khachaturian’s Piano Concerto for more than two decades, releasing his long-awaited recording of the work in 2025.
- Aram Khachaturian wrote his Piano Concerto in 1936, blending Soviet-era national style with a virtuosic piano tradition shaped by Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev.
- The concerto’s opening three-note motif recurs across movements, giving the sprawling work a strong sense of structural unity.
- Antonín Dvořák wrote Symphony No. 9 in 1893 while living in the United States, shaping a Romantic symphony influenced by American folk song and spirituals.
- Salina Fisher’s Tupaia draws inspiration from the Polynesian navigator whose celestial knowledge guided early European explorers, expressed through exposed instrumental lines and shimmering percussion textures.
